Where to stay in Rome

I dare say I know Rome pretty well. I’ve had plenty of chances to make quick day trips since I live just 120 km from the city — and I can honestly say it’s my favorite city in the world.

I’ve also had a few opportunities to stay overnight and explore different neighborhoods. So, trust me: I’m going to share some tips on the best areas to stay, along with the hotels I’ve actually stayed at. I only recommend places I’ve truly used (and paid for).

Location, Location, Location

Of course, this is the main concern. I spend hours researching each city I want to visit on Google Maps and other resources. I even go as far as street-viewing the exact routes I’ll take to the main places I want to see. I’m very thorough when deciding where to stay—and in Rome, location matters. It’s a walkable city, especially around the most sought-after sites, so staying in the right area can make or break your trip.

There are a few neighborhoods I particularly like. If it’s your first time in Rome, I recommend staying near Torre Argentina, Campo de’ Fiori, or Piazza Navona. I have three suggestions in this area.

The most charming and typically Roman choice is Hotel Primavera. Perfectly located between Piazza Navona and Campo de’ Fiori, it sits inside a historic building. You ride up in a quaint old-style cage elevator and step into a cozy corridor of rooms, greeted by a warm and friendly staff. The rooms are clean, the breakfast is good, and the price is fair for such a prime location. Because it’s a small property, I recommend booking well in advance, as rooms sell out quickly—especially during peak season.
